Porcelain Crowns

Dental crowns (which are also called “caps”) have been used in dentistry for many, many years.

But the modern versions of these restorations are different than those used in the past: today, dental patients can request porcelain crowns.

Designed to completely cover the surface of the tooth – right down to the gum line – porcelain crowns are not only extremely durable, but they are tooth-colored as well.

Dr. Jaros is pleased to offer porcelain crowns as one of the many services she provides to her Austin, TX, patients.

The Procedure

The procedure involved in getting a new porcelain crown requires two trips to our office.

During the patient’s first visit, Dr. Jaros will create an impression of the patient’s natural tooth, which will be used to create the new porcelain crown.

After that, she’ll remove any existing decay from the affected tooth – or remove the old filling or crown, if the patient is having old restorations replaced – and thoroughly clean to surface of the tooth.

She will also fit a temporary crown over the affected tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is made. During the second visit (typically 10 to 14 days later), Dr. Jaros will fit the patient with the custom-made porcelain crown.

Different Uses for Porcelain Crowns

Crowns are often an excellent way to save a badly damaged tooth, but porcelain crowns have other uses as well. Dr. Jaros might recommend a crown to cover a tooth that has undergone a root canal, for example.

And porcelain crowns are used in dental appliances such as dental bridges and implants. The porcelain material not only looks just like that patient’s natural tooth – it is also extremely strong and durable.
